Autr (DE) presents Final Forms

Talk

Date & time: Saturday 5th of October 14:00–16:00
Location: Helsinki City Museum
Duration: 2h
ARTIST
Gilbert Sinnott
The talk explores two key themes: feedback for real-time video painting in the performance Impact Studies with Timo Tuhkanen, and the creation of upcycled and recycled devices under the concept of Final Forms. Video feedback, a technique pioneered in the 1960s, is central to this work, where simple adjustments to video signals - such as light or color - produce complex effects reminiscent of organic and ecological systems. By using analogue video equipment and recycled materials, this hands-on approach allows for the creation of textured, organic visuals that challenge modern CGI. Through repurposing discarded technology like cathode ray tube TVs and outdated computer hardware, these devices are given new life and integrated into creative feedback loops.

Since 2014, Autr has been repurposing electronics to explore video feedback, culminating in the development of a video synthesizer that blends live-painting with digital synthesis, inspired by early computer art and video synthesis. In recent years, he has incorporated upcycled computer hardware and recycled plastics into his work, coming to realize the limitations of plastic recycling, as it can only be done a finite number of times before becoming waste again. To address this, we must create universal forms that remain useful beyond human lifetimes, with designs that not only serve our needs but also have potential value for non-human lifeforms and intelligences.

Gilbert Sinnott (b. Bristol, UK) is an artist & designer based in Berlin. As Autr, he produces video art and visual music by experimenting with real-time feedback loops, using hacked and repurposed video equipment integrated with self-built software.
