Kristian Koskela, a media artist and VJ from Tampere, Finland, presents his visual worlds under the name VJ KOSK. His style is characterized by a distorted, grungy, and flickering aesthetic. These visuals delve into themes of presence, immersion, and the meshing of analog and digital technology. Additionally, he explores the relation between human memory and archival data. In 2024, Koskela earned his Bachelor of Culture and Arts degree from the LAB University of Applied Sciences, specializing in media design. He has experimented with and performed live visuals ever since being introduced to them during his studies in 2021, which eventually led to his thesis on VJ demos and VJ culture.
Koskela's VJ performance highlights the interconnected patterns in the world. The patterns are brought to focus as technology and algorithms are endangering our attention, individuality, and environment. As technology and science has developed, we have been dissected and reduced everything into information, data, whether it be the way birds form flocks or how ice crystals make flowers on our windows. This neglecting of the simplistic beauty of the things around us is reflected through rough textures which emulate damaged analogue media and our own fallible memories. The data available to us is far too broad and fast to fully take in, but even from the flashing images we may be able to remember, and appreciate the beauty behind it.
