Autr (DE) & Timo Tuhkanen (FI) PRESENT Impact Studies

AV Live

LOCATION
WHS Teatteri Union
ARTISTS
Gilbert Sinnott, Timo Tuhkanen
Impact Studies builds on performances and research by Autr for live audio-visual improvisation using analogue and digital feedback loops, as a form of bioorganic synthesis, exploring the relationship between organic and inorganic, chaos and order, and non-linear dynamics that produce life.

Live visuals will be produced using the 3rd version of a video synthesizer built since 2016, and incorporates a rescanning prototype for digitising analogue PAL/NTSE signals. The synth acts as a tool for live-painting, and rethinks certain graphics processing paradigms as an alternative to contemporary computer graphics: inspired by pre-digital artists such as Nam June Paik, the Experimental Television Centre, Vasulkas & Prometheus.

Sound will be provided by Timo Tuhkanen, using audio feedback, resonance, contact mics, microtonal electric guitars and stringed instruments with guitar pedals become rhythmic masses of microtonal harmonies and changing atmospheres. The performance comprises an improvisational feedback loop between humans: sound is influenced by video and vice-versa, and in turn a feedback loop and synaethetic act with audience.

Gilbert Sinnott (b. Bristol, UK) is an artist & designer based in Berlin. As Autr, he produces video art and visual music by experimenting with real-time feedback loops, using hacked and repurposed video equipment integrated with self-built software. He has created many live shows that explore bioorganic feedback and techniques.

Timo Tuhkanen (b. 1983 Muscat, Oman) is an artist-composer, curator, musician, and researcher, based in Helsinki. Timo’s work intersects between contemporary art and microtonal music by mixing institutions, instruments, and research into conducting and the cultural and historical aspects of touch with concerts and exhibitions.
